Planning a Disney vacation and wondering how to skip the lines? Disney World Lightning Lane Passes are Disney’s current skip-the-line service, available for an additional cost, replacing the old FastPass and Genie+ systems. While the names keep changing, the goal is still the same: helping you spend less time waiting in line and more time enjoying the parks.
Disney previously used Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane purchases, but the system has now transitioned to Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Pass, and Premier Pass. While the concept is similar, the newer system allows guests to pre-book attractions before their vacation instead of waking up every morning at 7 AM during their trip.
Lightning Lane Passes help you "skip" the line at a majority of rides at the parks. You will use a special lane called the Lightning Lane to enter the ride to avoid the longer regular standby queue. Although Lightning Lane helps you skip a majority of the wait time, you could still wait about 15-20 minutes at a time.

Here’s everything we’ll cover in this Disney World Lightning Lane guide:
Types of Disney World Lightning Lane Passes
There are three different types of Disney World Lightning Lane passes.
Lightning Lane Single Pass:
Disney World Lightning Lane Single Pass allows you to purchase access to one specific attraction and skip the standby line during a designated one-hour return window. These attractions are not included with Lightning Lane Multi Pass and are typically the most in-demand rides in each park. Guests can purchase a Single Pass separately for select attractions to maximize their park time and experience more with less waiting.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass:
Lightning Lane Multi Pass is Disney's primary skip-the-line service, offering expedited access to many attractions throughout the park. Guests can pre-book up to three Lightning Lane selections and continue making additional reservations throughout the day after redeeming them. Attractions designated as Lightning Lane Single Pass are not included and must be purchased separately.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass:
Lightning Lane Premier Pass gives guests one-time access to every available Lightning Lane attraction in a single park, including both Multi Pass and Single Pass experiences. With no return times to book or reservations to manage, it offers the most flexible way to maximize your day, and is often considered the closest experience to a Disney VIP Tour without a private guide.
The Premier Pass is restricted to a single park per day. If you have a Park Hopper ticket, the Premier Pass will not transfer over and would need to purchase separate passes or utilize Lightning Lane Multi or Single pass for the other parks you choose to visit.
Which Disney World Lightning Lane Pass is Best for You?
Single Pass May Be Best If:
You only care about the top ride at each park
You’re on a tighter budget but want to skip the lines where it matters most
You rope drop most attractions
Multi Pass May Be Best If:
You want to maximize rides
You’re visiting during busy seasons
You have a short trip
Premier Pass May Be Best If:
Budget is less of a concern
You dislike scheduling
You want the closest experience to a VIP tour
What Attractions Use Lightning Lane at Disney World?
A majority of rides and shows are included within the Disney World Lightning Lane passes.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass: All of the Single Pass and Multi Pass rides are included in Premier Pass.
Lightning Lane Single Pass: The most popular one or two rides at each park fall under Lightning Lane Single Pass. This means you will need to purchase these rides separately.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass: A majority of the other attractions in the parks are included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
When pre-booking your Multi Pass rides, there may be tiers based on ride popularity.
Tier 1 are the more popular Multi Pass rides and you will only be able to pre-book 1 of these.
Tier 2 rides will fill out the remaining 2 pre-selections.
Animal Kingdom does not currently have tiers for Multi Pass, so you can pre-select any 3 rides.

How to Use Lightning Lane Passes in the Parks
Viewing Your Booked Disney World Lightning Lanes
You can view all currently booked multi and single passes by going to Lightning Lanes on the Menu screen.
Modifying Your Disney World Lightning Lane Rides
To modify your rides or scheduled time, tap the Lightning Lane Passes section on the app’s home screen to find your plans. Then, you can:
Change your selected park and/or date in advance (subject to availability)—up until the moment you redeem your first Lightning Lane selection of the day.
Change each selected experience and/or arrival window in advance (subject to availability)—up until the start of the arrival window
Checking into your Lightning Lane
Each of your Single Pass or Multi Pass rides will have a one hour return window. You can arrive up to 5 minutes before that timeframe or up to 15 minutes late (although do your best to be on time).
When it is time for your window, you will enter the Lightning Lane line. These are marked clearly with signs.
You will have to scan into the ride to prove you have a Lightning Lane (and a lot of rides require you to scan at two locations). You can scan your MagicBand, your physical park ticket, or your MagicMobile pass.
Booking Additional Multi Pass Rides
Multi Pass is great because while you get to book 3 rides before your stay, you keep booking rides for the rest of the day as long as there is availability.
Once you've redeemed a Lightning Lane reservation, you can immediately book another available experience. A helpful phrase to remember is: "Scan in, book another!" Master this strategy, and you'll maximize your Lightning Lane selections throughout the day.
You will go to Wait Times & Showtimes on the Menu Screen to see all of the different options. You will select your park and see all of the attractions and for those with Lightning Lanes, you will see the next available time.
Pro Tip: The home screen on My Disney Experience does a great job of stating if you can make another reservation.

Are Disney World Lightning Lanes Worth It?
This is a great question and it really depends on different circumstances:
Are you going during a historically busy time (holidays, spring break, etc)? The crowds will be high and being able to skip even a few lines makes it worthwhile in my opinion.
Do you have budget for them? It is always nice to skip the lines if you have the budget for it.
Are you only there a day or two? If you are not at Disney long, it is nice to have Lightning Lanes to help you fit more into your short trip.
Are you getting a Disney Disability Access Service (DAS) Pass (must meet Disney requirements and steps for this)? DAS users will use the Lightning Lanes for access. Getting both helps you skip more lines, but may not be necessary depending on the crowd level.
Is there a must do ride for you that will make or break your trip? If yes, get the Lightning Lane for it! Just always be aware that rides can go down at anytime so don't plan a whole trip around a ride.
Are thrill rides your priority? Thrill rides tend to have the longest lines so getting Lightning Lanes can definitely be worth it.
Disney World Lightning Lane FAQs
Can I book multiple passes per day? Yes! You can book Multi Pass and Single Pass for the same day and they can be at different parks.
What if I have park hopper tickets? Lightning Lane Multi Pass is available for advance purchase for only one park per day, which means you can only pre-book up to three Lightning Lanes per day in one park. If you have park hopper tickets, you ARE able to book additional Lightning Lanes for the other 3 theme parks once you’ve used your first pre-booked selection on your park day.
Premier Pass is only good at one park per day, but you could book Single Pass or Multi Pass for the second park.
Do I get to choose my 1 hour arrival window? Yes! When you pre-book your selections, you will be assigned the earliest time initially but you can modify to the available arrival window that works best for you.
Can I purchase all of my Lightning Lane Multi Passes and Single Passes at the same time? When purchasing in advance, you can purchase your Multi Pass and up to two Single Passes for one day of your vacation in one transaction. You will repeat that process for each park day that you wish to purchase a Multi Pass/Single Passes.
Can I modify my selections once I book? Yes! If you’ve changed your mind on a time or an attraction, you can modify what you’ve booked in your MyDisneyExperience app plans.
Do I have to buy Lightning Lanes if I want to ride something? Not at all. Standby queues will always be available!
What if a ride I book a Lightning Lane for goes down or is otherwise unavailable on my park day? In cases like this, Disney will issue what’s known as a Multiple Experience Pass, to be used at another attraction within the same tier as the one that was unavailable.
I don’t like my choices, can I get a refund? No. Lightning Lane Passes are non-refundable. Even if your top choices aren’t available for pre-booking, you can still pre-book what is available and use Lightning Lane Multi Pass all day on your actual park days. Or if you don't like your choices, skip purchasing it and aim to enjoy early entry to beat some of the lines.
